.01 Who We Are
We are dreamers, believers, planners and creators.
We imagine what the world could be and then roll up our sleeves and make it so. This is where ideas are nurtured; where we dream big; where asking, “What if...” is the norm.
.02 This is Our Home
RTP is the largest research park in the country, but the secret to our success is not our land; the secret is the fabric of our community.
We thrive because our bonds run deep. We practice the art of collaboration daily and share in the joy of discovery. We push the bounds of human imagination, finding ways to make the world a better place.
Dream big with us... and never stop believing.
.03 Our Story
Over the last half century, the people of North Carolina taught us how to chase dreams and overcome seemingly impossible challenges.
They had the creativity and courage to see possibility and make it real.
.04 A Long Shot
In the dawn of the post-war era, North Carolina was one of the poorest states in America. Our economy fluctuated with annual crop yields and jobs were few and far between. Most people didn’t believe the state would ever change.
.05 Seeing Potential
The Research Triangle Park’s founders saw things differently. They saw some of the brightest minds graduating from nearby universities. They saw the potential for collaboration among business, government and universities.
They imagined a place where research communities would come together and invent the future. This was an opportunity to provide meaningful jobs, improve access to education and help North Carolinians live fulfilling lives.
They saw what the future could be.
.06 Spirit of Generosity
The concept for RTP was difficult to get off the ground. Our founders knew the idea had to grow from within the state. The plan needed to spark the hearts and minds of North Carolinians.
The bold idea: transition RTP from a for-profit real estate model to a not-for-profit venture. Instead of profiting personally, all profits would go directly into strengthening the community. The founders' spirit of generosity made all the difference.
It inspired individuals across the state to come together to begin building RTP.
.07 Sharing the Vision
It would take everyone working together to make this bold vision a reality. Our founders traveled the state, sharing their vision and inviting others to build upon it.
One conversation at a time, they raised enough capital to secure land for the Park. But companies were reluctant to move to North Carolina; they needed to see the vision in action.
.08 Building Momentum
Action is exactly what our founders took. University researchers banded together to form a traveling road show, highlighting the research strengths of our region to industry far and wide. Partnerships began to form between corporations, universities and communities and cross-sector collaboration began to accomplish great feats.
In 1960, RTP attracted its first company – Chemstrand – the inventor of AstroTurf. Shortly thereafter, IBM came to the area with a 600,000 square foot research facility and the future of RTP as an innovation community was assured.
.09 Keeping the Promise

- Environmental Sciences
Today, we share our home with more than 250 companies and 50,000 people with expertise in fields such as micro-electronics, telecommunications, biotechnology, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and environmental sciences. Industries invest more than $300 million in R&D at the region’s universities each year – double the average R&D investment for innovation clusters elsewhere in the nation.
.10 A Story With A Purpose
Our founders had a bold idea. They started with “what if...” and created the possibility of a vibrant future. Out of scrub pine and keen ambition, they built the world’s most successful research park. At the start, the idea seemed impossible to many. The obstacles seemed endless.
But their hope, camaraderie and perseverance showed us that anything can happen. Anything can be. From our founders, we’ve learned to build strong connections and push the bounds of imagination. And we remember. Their spirit is in us all.
.11 The Next Chapter
Our community is vibrant – but the world is changing.
In the spirit of our founders, we’re building a new kind of home for today’s dreamers, believers, planners and creators. But it is a bold vision and it will take the passion of everyone to make it so.
As we move forward, we are looking for others with vision – those who are passionate are welcome to join us in this bold pursuit.
