RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC [February 3, 2025] – Research Triangle Foundation of North Carolina (Foundation), stewards of Research Triangle Park (RTP), today announced that the companies of Research Triangle Park (RTP) voted to approve revised and amended land covenants, taking an important first step towards allowing development options that will maintain RTP’s competitiveness with innovation communities around the world.
The vote took place on Friday, Jan. 31, during a scheduled meeting of the RTP Owners & Tenants Association (Association). With a quorum met, 96% of votes were cast in favor of the proposed covenant amendment. Of the total number of eligible votes in the Association, 97% were cast at Friday’s meeting.
This significant milestone follows a years-long collaboration between the Association and the Foundation. As the first major amendment of the covenants in 65 years, the approved changes reflect feedback from more than 120 meetings and discussions that the Foundation held with Association representatives, RTP companies and key stakeholders.
“We greatly appreciate the dedication and time commitment of RTP Owners & Tenant Association members, especially the Working Group participants, who provided critical feedback that helped inform the decision-making process,” said Scott Levitan, president and CEO, Research Triangle Foundation of North Carolina. “We look forward to working with RTP companies, landowners, our board of directors and government partners to build on this momentum and advance the vision for RTP 3.0.”
Led by the Foundation in collaboration with RTP companies, chambers of commerce leaders, local officials and Durham and Wake County representatives, RTP 3.0 is a planning process aimed to envision RTP for next 50 years. RTP 3.0 is focused on creating opportunities for landowners to reimagine their corporate campuses and meet new workforce demands while enhancing R&D efforts and creating inviting communities.
As a next step, the Foundation will continue to work with Association members and company leaders to establish land use regulations that will apply to the new development options going forward. In parallel, the Foundation will work with Durham and Wake counties to amend their zoning ordinances to allow for the new RTP 3.0 development options.
