As all RTP working parents are well aware, summer break is right around the corner. With all the fun summer activities like camp, swimming pools, and popsicles, it’s easy to see how reading could get lost in the shuffle. However, summer break has proven to be detrimental to the progress made in the classroom for some students. When there aren’t enough reading materials available, reading skills that have progressed two steps forward during the school year, sometimes take one step back during the summer.
Here at The Research Triangle Park, we believe every kid should have some fun books to keep their skills sharp all throughout summer! That’s why we’ve partnered with a local charity called Book Harvest for a Park-wide book drive called Books on Break, to launch on the first day of National Volunteer Week! Book Harvest will distribute the books to underprivileged students in local elementary schools to help prevent summer reading skills loss.
