Bull City Summer at CAM Raleigh: Celebrating the Art & Craft of Baseball

Recently, I was fortunate enough to attend the “Bull City Summer” member event at CAM Raleigh –a celebration of Durham baseball through photography, inspired by the 25thanniversary of the movie: Bull Durham. The work of ten nationally acclaimed photographers was represented. Sam Stephenson, Project Director, describes the exhibit as “a portrait of the art and craft and grit of baseball and the community that revolves around it.” And indeed, the community was present. Families, baseball aficionados and art appreciators all gathered to enjoy beautiful photographs, live music, delicious food (corn dogs!) and complimentary beverages.

As at other CAM exhibit events, children docents were on hand to expound on the art, artists and answer any questions or curve balls you threw their way. They were delightful, did an amazing job and were a reminder of CAM’s education connection (NCSU) and focus. (The facility has a room devoted to hands-on art and craft experiences for children to express themselves as well!) It was a wonderful evening. CAM Raleigh curates contemporary art and design, exposing innovative artistic ideas of those still emerging, growing and living. You can also experience CAM art at the Research Triangle Park Headquarters. Through a partnership with CAM Raleigh, the RTP Headquarters is able to display artwork provided by CAM and its exhibitors. Currently on display in RTP’s lobby and Conference Center is work by Mishka Henner who uses Google Earth Pro to reveal visual similarities between American oil fields and circuit boards.
