Write to change the world: Shaping public opinion with Op Eds

The Frontier | 800 Park Offices Drive | RTP, NC 27709 Nov 2 4:30 pm - Nov 2 6:00 pm

Triangle Alliance for Environmental Policy invites you to join us for our second workshop led by Elizabeth French, M.A., Assistant Dean for Strategic Initiatives at UNC Chapel Hill.

Want to get your message out? Shape public opinion? Even with the explosion of social media, Op Eds are a critical anchor in any media advocacy strategy. This hands-on workshop will: (a) introduce participants to the purpose and potential of Op Eds as part of a larger media advocacy strategy; (b) provide tips and strategies for developing effective op-eds; (c) help writers “translate” their professional knowledge into brief, powerful arguments that can shape public opinion; and (d) provide participants with tips on amplifying their voice through the media.

To get the most out of this workshop, we recommend reading at least one of the following effective Op Eds, including a few written by graduate students (indicated by an asterisk) and "More than a message: framing public health advocacy to change corporate practices" by Dorfman, Wallack, and Woodruff.

It will be helpful to come with a topic in mind to start the outline for your own Op Ed, including some quantitative information that will help bolster your argument (e.g., information that could be used for social math, or X number of people are affected by oil spills, etc.).

Bring your laptops; our workshop will be interactive and you will want to plug in!
