Protecting the Environment

The Research Triangle Park was established as a magnet for research and development to transform the region and state’s economy. As such, the guidelines for the Park mandate that occupants of Park be “design, research and related operations.”  Companies wanting to locate in The Research Triangle Park can either purchase land on which to build individual campuses or can rent space in one of the several multi-tenant buildings.

An important element of the planning of the Park was the commitment to sacrifice the total amount of building space that could be accommodated in order to preserve the natural balance and integrity of the land. The early planners of the Park used the topography, drainage patterns, and vegetation of the land to create an environment with the highest possible physical quality for the researchers’ work experience. This commitment to protecting the natural environment continues in the current make-up of the Park.
