Local Governments

The Research Triangle area is made up of three counties and their municipalities. The governmental structures of these counties and their principal cities are listed below.

DURHAM COUNTY
Durham County is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners and administered by a county manager. Durham County is represented in the North Carolina General Assembly by two Senators and four Representatives.

City of Durham
The City of Durham is the county seat of Durham County and the only municipality in Durham County. The City is governed by a seven-member council including the Mayor and administered by a city manager.

ORANGE COUNTY
Orange County is governed by a Board of five county commissioners and admini-stered by a county manager. Orange County is represented in the North Carolina General Assembly by one Senator and three Representatives.

Town of Chapel Hill
The Town of Chapel Hill is the county's largest municipality. Chapel Hill is governed by a town council and mayor. Citizen advisory boards are also a strong constituency within the city.

The Town of Hillsborough is the county seat of Orange County.

 



WAKE COUNTY
Wake County is governed by seven county commissioners and administered by a county manager. Wake County is represented in the North Carolina General Assembly by four Senators and nine Representatives.

City of Raleigh
The City of Raleigh is the county seat of Wake County and the State Capital. It is governed by a mayor and a seven-member council. Five of the council members are elected by district and two are elected "at-large."

Other Wake County municipalities include: Apex, Cary, Fuquay-Varina, Garner, Holly Springs, Knightdale, Morrisville, Rolesville, Wake Forest, Wendell, and Zebulon.
