groundworkk: Micro-funding Local Projects

The concept of groundworkk is simple... At groundworkk, attendees donate $5
to hear and learn about local, community ideas and projects through short
presentations and Question/Answer sessions. Presentations are followed by
refreshments, prepared by an aspiring area chef, during which attendees have
the opportunity to discuss the creative ideas in a relaxed, communal atmosphere.
During the refreshments, attendees vote for their favorite project/idea and
the winning idea/project is awarded the funds raised from that evening's event! 

Rooms of Wonder: From Wunderkammer to Museum, 1565–1865

On Saturday, April 12, during the UNC Science Expo, we’ll be offering special tours of this fascinating new exhibit on UNC-Chapel Hill’s campus. This exhibit is an assemblage of extraordinary rare books that document the cabinets of curiosities formed mainly by Europeans, as well as their descendant phenomena, which include the first art and natural history museums in Europe and the U.S.A. Curated by UNC-Chapel Hill alumna Florence Fearrington.

The exhibit runs February 20-April 20.

The History of the Universe with Nasa's John Mather

NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Senior Astrophysicist, John Mather, will explain the history of the universe, from the Big Bang to now, and on to the future. He will also show NASA’s plans for the next great telescope in space, the James Webb Space Telescope, which will peer inside the dusty cocoons where stars and planets are being born. Mather is the senior project scientist for the telescope and won the 2006 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the Cosmic Background Explorer satellite.

Reading the Past: Mind, Brain and Archaeology

Cognitive archaeology, the study of the ancient mind, looks at how people in ancient societies thought. This workshop opens new perspectives in the study of the past and in the interpretation of the ancient and modern mind by approaching research questions at the intersection between the brain sciences, humanities, archaeology, anthropology and visual studies. NC Sci Fest: The Science of Sports featuring ESPN's Sports Science Host John Brenkus
