Industries

The Research Triangle Park is an epicenter of innovation in more than a dozen industries. Companies represented in RTP include IBM, GlaxoSmithKline, RTI International, Cisco Systems, NetApp, BASF, Eisai, Cree, Biogen IDEC, United Therapeutics, Bayer CropScience, Duport, Credit Suisse, Fidelity Investments and Syngenta. In addition, a number of U.S. Federal Agencies have a presence in the Park, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, and the U.S. Forestry Service.

Industry clusters located in RTP reflect the research strengths at the region’s renowned learning institutions—UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke University and N.C. State University. Established clusters such as biotechnology (including agriculture-related biotechnology and pharmaceuticals) and information technology as well as emerging ones such as advanced gaming, green and nanotechnology have strong roots in and are competitive because of the research at these universities and the confluence of academic disciplines that each provides. Many RTP-based companies have spun out of the universities.

RTP also offers an established network of support organizations and technology infrastructure located within the Park to support a diverse range of companies. From the North Carolina Biotechnology Center to Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, a host of organizations and networks exist to complement and catalyze activities around a number of cluster industries.

These local assets, combined with the Triangle’s favorable operating costs, established industry support, and record of public-private partnerships, make RTP a premier site for scientific and technological innovation.
